I’ve been following this Fitness Coach for the past year on social media who has made a shift towards motivational speaking. I’ve been enjoying his posts about his life transformation and shift in perspective/gratitude. A few months ago I heard him talk about how you can have the best day ever and be the best version of you possible! The big take home message was “Get your mind right”. Everything starts with your thoughts. If you think negative about something, you will have a negative experience. If you think positive about something, you will have a positive experience. Also, not setting yourself up for failure by talking yourself out of something. At the end of the 1/2 day event we did a mental challenge. All 100+ participants (1/2 of them NOT fitness people) were challenged to do a wall sit for as long as they could while giving themselves the BEST motivational talk ever! Get in your head and tell yourself that you CAN do it! I lasted about 5 minutes then slid down the wall. We were told to cheer someone else on after we stopped the wall sit. There were about 11 people left after 35 minutes!!! Impressive for sure, but this one girl stood out to me. She was crying after about 10 minutes on the wall, sitting there with her eyes closed, and tears rolling down her cheeks. People cheered her on, boosted her up, encouraged her, and she remained on the wall crying – occasionally opening her eyes to acknowledge someone. SHE LASTED 35 MINUTES in that position, talking to herself, crying, and shaking! Talk about determination and the power of the mind! She proved that your body can do anything your mind will let it do!!
In my studio I might not ask clients to wall sit for as long as they can, but I will ask them to “get your mind right”. Having the right frame of mind when you are trying to accomplish something will make all the difference!
P.S. I’m a sap and all mushy so I talked to girl who held the wall sit for 35 minutes after class and she was still teary eyed. She told me that as she drove into the parking lot that morning she started to have a panic attack because she wasn’t sure she could get through the event. At that point, both of us are all teary eyed because not only did she get through the event, she kicked some serious butt!! She overcame her fear, on her own, got her mind right, and realized that SHE IS STRONG!
